RECREATION

Recreation is the refreshment of strength and spirits. Of just simply, activities done for enjoyment. RECREATION

Let’s reiterate the triple R’s.

  1. Rest- peace of mind and spirit.
  2. Relaxation-Techniques to remain calm.
  3. Recreation- activities to refresh your spirit, mood and strength.

Plan events to rejuvenate. Do not become enslaved to a job, influenced and controlled by pressures all year, then take a one week vacation and expect to be fully recharged, at the end of seven days. Many times the planning, packing and travailing to the destination is exhausting in itself. Then, vacation is jammed with “must see” activities requiring strict timelines and little time for rest. By the time, you arrive back home, rejuvenation has occurred, but is snuffed out by inanition. Yearly vacations are important, to ventures to exotic places or to visit friends and families, however it may not be not enough.

I recommend daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly events to recharge. Suggestions:

  • Daily- take walks, listen to music, watch funny movies or a comedy sitcom.
  • Weekly- take an art, dance, cooking or martial art class. Date night with your spouse or date night with yourself. For the single individuals, get dressed and treat yourself to dinner and a movie.
  • Monthly- Go to interesting seminars, local city outings, concerts or festivals. Hang out with the “girls” “boys” or a sibling.
  • Yearly-Plan vacations, the usual locations, but plan to go to destination you have never traveled, like Europe, New York or California, somewhere different. If possible, avoid taking vacation time with doctor’s appointments and other not fun activities. If these obligations must be fulfilled, squeeze in rec time. Appointments during the day, fun time in the evenings or vice versa. Or, duties in the beginning of the week and fun time at the end of the week.

My philosophy is to always have something to look forward in doing, something to charge your life batteries and keep them charged. Frequent small events can get us through until the larger ones come around. And realize, God wants us to enjoy our lives.

There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God. Ecclesiastes 2:24King James Version (KJV)

Have rest, relaxation and recreation every day of your life. Start today!

RELAXATION

RELAXATIONRelaxation is the extension of rest. Relaxation is something you do to stop feeling nervous or worried. A way to rest and enjoy yourself.

What do you do during stressed time?

  1. Call a friend of family member to rehash the negative issue, allowing them to fuel the matter?
  2. Do you go into an angry frenzy? Saying and doing hurtful things to others and yourself?
  3. Or do you sob, cry and mourn, slipping into a depressive’s state?

All three of these examples, gives room for the devil to slip in and make sure you remain in the stressed, angry, depressive mood.

Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:27 Neither give place to the devil. Ephesians 4:26-27 (KJV).

What should you do? Stop going to the world for answers. There is no question, issue or trouble on earth, that Heaven does not have the answer, solution or the way out. When trials come your way, yield to God, and His Word. Power will be granted to sustain the devil and his wiles.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 (KJV)

Can you imagine how much relaxation could take place in your life when you realize there are spiritual avenues and simple relaxation techniques to perform?

  1. Saying a prayer
  2. Reciting scriptures
  3. Listening to calming  music
  4. Taking in deep breathing and exhaling slowly
  5. Thinking before reacting
  6. Taking control of your emotions

One important thing to do, have a meeting with yourself. Ask yourself questions. What is really going on? Is this a battle to fight? Is this going to rob me of peace? Am I allowing my emotions to drive me to dangerous places? Muzzling your emotions is a key factor. When you discover your journey with God and begin to comprehend His Wisdom , you will discover, it’s not about you. It will always be about God and His Word, Wisdom and Way.

Perform the relaxation techniques often. Relaxation can occur in everyday activities and during stressful time. Rely on God and allow Him to assist you in your relaxation quest.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

After relaxation comes, recreation. Let’s have some fun in the sun. Read on to the next post.

THE TIME OF REST, RELAXATION AND RECREATION

RESTSummer is my favorite season of the year. It’s a time of rest, relaxation, and recreation. These feelings of liberation stemmed from my youth, when school, morning and evening rituals were aborted and playtime, sleeping in, and staying up late were embraced.

As an adult, I am committed to work schedules, day and night regimes, but the three hottest months of the year continue to be marked as my season of choice. The longer days, outdoors activities and the lightweight fashion outweighs any of my daily obligations.

Summer is the time for the 3 R’s for obvious reasons. I discovered with God I can have rest, relaxation, and recreation all year long. Let’s begin with rest, God wants us to come to Him and have rest.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 (KJV)

Do you feel weighed down by duties, responsibilities, stresses, and messes? God encourages to remove the heavy yoke of the world, work and worries.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11:29 (KJV)

The truth is many people do not know how to rest. Are you one of these individuals?

  • Are you seated on a white sandy beach with aqua colored water and a perfect blue sky? Instead of looking up and out at the scenery, you’re looking down at your Smartphone or tablet checking Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, seeing what other people are doing and saying. On your outing, you send multiple pictures to fill your social media pages, but, how much “rest” did you actually receive? Your pictures illustrate rest, but, your mind and body did not align.
  • A lunch break may be 30 minutes to an hour, it’s a time to get away from work, flush your mind from the morning, and refresh your mental psyche for the afternoon. Instead of rest, you’re checking emails, sending texts and worrying about evening chores at home.
  • You can’t sleep at night because your mind is churning about what items didn’t get done that day, what things need to get accomplished the next day or worrying about situations beyond your control.
  • When you’re at home, you’re thinking about work. When you’re at work, you’re thinking about home.
  • When you’re with the children, you contemplate about alone time. When you’re alone you feel guilty about not being with the children.
  • You’re single and daydream about being married. You‘re married and daydream about your single life.

Rest in God is a peace of mind or spirit, that whatever situation is present, whatever issue occurs, whomever you are with or not with, you can rest and peace knowing your burdens are at God’s feet.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.  1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

How do you receive this great feat of rest?

Pray for peace. Embrace the concept that rest is a mindset, a peaceful spirit.  Just because you’re doing things that appear to be restful, if your mind and spirit are not calm you’re not resting.  Recite this scripture:

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27King James Version (KJV)

Work to rest. Work for your rest. Get chores, obligations out of the way and carve out rest time for yourself. Start small. It may be a bubble bath, a cup of coffee at a local shop, a walk around the neighborhood, a glass of wine while listening to an audio book. Flush your mind and pray for peace to circulate through your body, like blood circulates through veins.

Choose your battles. Learn to fight the battles that really need to be fought. Some battles are not worth fighting. Ask yourself, is this worth robbing me of my rest and peace.  If not, let it go.

This post focused on the art of rest. Rest in God with a peace of mind. Nextl we will address relaxation. Staying calm.
